All about the convenience Now here’s where our Korean friends would not go. It’s a trap they say but we are tourists and really even after having visited before I still go here. It has the shops we want to visit and the food stalls, though expensive, really is convenient having it all there in one place. It closes later than most of the other shops too and the energy is palpable.

Bustling street with Expensive Street Food It is indeed a bustling and vibrant district in Seoul, South Korea, very energetic atmosphere, diverse shopping options, and vibrant street life. Here you can experience:

Shopping Paradise, Cosmetic Hub, Street Food Haven: though can be very expensive
Entertainment and Performances: a lot of street performers here including musicians and dancers, add to the lively atmosphere, creating an engaging environment for visitors to enjoy

Accessibility: easily accessible by public transportation, making it a central and convenient location for both locals and tourists exploring the city

A Vibrant, Food-Filled Shopping Wonderland Myeongdong is easily one of the most exciting streets I’ve ever experienced. Packed with endless street food options (including plenty of halal choices), skincare shops, clothes, and everything in between—it’s a shopper’s dream.

It does get extremely busy, especially on weekends, which can feel overwhelming for some. But if you enjoy vibrant energy and variety, you’ll love it here. Overall, a must-visit in Seoul!

Lots of shopping, decent food, and nanta show Myeongdong is unique because it has more than just shopping. There is a beautiful cathedral, some decent food in the area, the nanta show, and unique street designs. It also has specifically the night market like food stalls, some are good but some are ripoff. Make sure you walk down the entire street before you buy, the prices of the same food between stalls can be different.

Other than that, shopping streets/Malls in south Korea are like churches in Italy. You will get fatigued real quick after you have been to the 5th Young, 7th art box, 3rd kakao friends and 4th aland. They are all the same. , which is worth a visit on its own, Brace yourself for a lot of repetitive shops if you have been to hongdae or a few other shopping districts in seoul.

Masks, food and clothing Been to Seoul 10 times but 1st time here. Quite the shopping street, much like Ximen Taipei or Harajuku Tokyo. Some big brands are here like H&M, Addidas (huge and cool, recommended. Though service is blah), but many local brands too. Also many cafes and restaurants. And maybe 50 shops selling face masks

Great place but not what it used to be, somehow Something is different since the last I was here - pre Covid. The crowd are still there, but the excitement has reduced. The street food are still there, but it lost the Korean feel. The shops are there but the people are somewhere else. Don’t get me wrong, myeongdong is still one of the first places you have to visit when first in Seoul. Vibrant, energetic, fun, colorful. Just wished that this is my first visit.

You can find traditional stores selling souvenirs, cafes, skin care products, clothes etc. You can also find street vendors selling all kinds of finger food, BBQ meat, and seafood as well as juices. Definitely not my cup of tea but I was in the area with a friend so we just quickly browsed through it.

We Kept Coming Back! We arrived in Myeondong on a day that was snowing. The atmosphere was mesmerizing! Sure it was pretty cold, but that made all the hot steamy street food look even more appetising. We loved trying out all the various types of food. Just go for the ones with longer queues. It never fails.

The only negative was the lack of dustbins. These were far and few between. Where do people throw their food waste? We brought a small plastic bag, and threw it only when we reached our hotel.

Stay away if you hate crowds and noise When you think of Seoul you probably have a visual in mind, and that visual is probably Myeongdong. It's an exciting shopping experience, particularly for snack foods and beauty products. Three Olive Young stores including the flagship, and big stores for popular skincare brands like TonyMoly, PrettySkin, Mediheal and Holika Holika. Many huge snack food stores that are fun to browse for gifts. Plenty of cheap souvenir stands too. Lots of places to eat, check prices. Street food too, supposedly there are better street food markets but it's fine. All fun to experience once but it's definitely sensory overload.

My kinda street food market! In the evening at the famous Myeongdong Street Food Market, stallholders sell all kinds of yummy street food. Do try the baked cheese with condensed milk (a weird combination that actually works!); kimchi and pork dumplings (crispy and really addictive); hotteok honey pancakes (so, so good!); chicken/pork/duck skewers (delicious!), beef steak (yummy!) and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice just to name a few. Most food items cost an affordable KRW5,000 per serving, while the hotteok cost only KRW2,000 and the pomegranate juice KRW7,000. The beef steak cost KRW15,000, which was still such a steal. For fun, I also bought a heart-shaped dalgona (honeycomb candy, à la "Squid Game") for KRW5,000.

Personally, I much preferred this street food market in Myeongdong to Gwangjang Market. (The latter had pigs trotters, blood sausages, etc, lying around, and it somehow made me wanna puke. Seriously.)

Myeongdong Shopping Street is also a must-visit because drum roll Olive Young Myeongdong is located here! One can find all kinds of Korean skincare products here (eg Round Lab, Skin 1004, Biodance, Torriden, Abib, Mediheal, COSRX, Skin Food, Numbuzin, Manyo, Dr G, Isoi, Sungboon Editor, Beauty of Joseon, etc), with some items on sale. Shoppers were grabbing stuff like everything was free. LOL. It’s crazy. South Korea has conquered the world with its beauty products!

Once again, it's genius that there is duty-free shopping at Olive Young. So remember to bring your passport. I saw some shoppers dragging along their cabin bag on wheels to fill and lug their loot away with greater ease. Talk about women on a mission!

Crowded, pushy shop assistants Shop assistants inside beauty stores are pushy and hard sell their in-house brand, stared me down when I didn't buy products that they recommended, the rude ones are those who can speak Mandarin. Some clothing stores don't allow you to look through their shirts on the shelves, you can only select from the limited displayed items on the rack. Frantic but worth a few visits It's frantic and can be overwhelming, but worth a few visits.

During the day, the shops are a little easier to navigate, as the food vendors don't start up until later in the day. There are lots of similar things but in amongst it, a couple of vendors or shops doing their own thing, so it's worth looking through everything.

If you're looking for street food (which mostly is not representative of actual Korean food, but still fun and tasty) then this is the place.

There are heaps of places to buy Korean skin care and beauty products (Olive Young has many stored in the area, with the flagship store currently being renovated) (Olive Young does tax refunds on the spot for any purchases over 30,000 Won) as well as Nature Republic, Tony Moly, and heaps others, which sell the usual Korean face masks (containing snail secretions through to pearls from 200 to 5,000 Won each - cheaper to buy in premade packs of 10 or more). There are a lots of fashion and sports stores (Zara, Spao, Nike, 8Seconds, etc), cheap jewellery places (The Plain, RedEye, etc) markets (7-11, Korea Mart, etc to buy food, drinks, snacks), places to eat, there's a Daiso, a Mixue, a second hand clothes store (sells by the 100g) pretty much anything you need. There are even couple of ca cafes. And if you walk through to the Lotte store side, you can get to Lotte, Lotte Young Plaza, Avenuel via the substations, which themselves are underground malls.

Lots of fun to be had, although absolutely frantically busy as the street food markets start up. And the tourists are not looking where they are going as they're too busy taking photos.

The only word of warning is that there are very few bins (anywhere in Seoul but noticeable in Myeongdong as you usually have a takeaway plate of food) there are bins at the major entrance and exit points but the easiest thing to do if simply stand to the side near the vendor you bought the food from, eat it and ask the vendor to take the rubbish back - they will all do this with no problems. If you are intending on eating while you walk, take a small plastic bag with you and a pack of wet wipes so you can clean yourself up and contain your rubbish as you go.

I didn't find any public toilets in the Myeong streets are, but there are some in the underground malls joining Myeongdong to the Lotte stores.

It’s all about the night market I had the luxury of staying two minutes away from this night market. It’s a really good one. Plenty of food. I will say, it’s mostly snacks. A few pieces of chicken or shrimp, meat skewers, ice cream, churros. There’s very few (maybe 3-5) stalls that serve actual meals, these being noodle dishes. That being said, I’d recommend strolling down the night market and trying a little bit of everything! There’s some really unique Korean foods you have to try (like Kimbap). We even bought the famous Squid Game cookies!!

Nothing but an overhyped tourist trap Nothing really special. Just a concentration of retail shops, street stalls and eateries targeting the tourist crowd. It is probably easier to find a foreigner than a local at this space.
The main reason this place failed to impress is that there is a lack of infrastructure to support the tourist crowd. There is no proper map, directional signs of the place, it lacks seats and trash bins.
There is a lack of variety in the items sold by the makeshift street stalls. Generally food items that are sold at one end can be found at the other end. (So don’t worry if you missed your favorite food item, very likely you can find it down the street again) Food choice is nothing to shout about, apart from a few odd stalls with unique offerings, most of the items sold can be found in other food street vendors in Asia.
Prices of the street food is another let down. For the same price that one fork out, one can probably get a decent bite at a sit down cafe.
The retail scene also face similar issue of having repeated brands concentrated at the same area. The place is a haven for all thing cosmetics but other then an odd fashion or souvenir shops there is very little else for shoppers.
The saving grace would be the food outlets. It’s scatter around (some are located above ground level) and there is something for all taste and preference.
If your main objective is to shop for cosmetics products then this place is ideal. But if the intention is to experience local street food, it may be better to spend the time and money on authentic Korean food at the various food market around the city for a better experience.

Touristy area that can be unwelcoming to tourists The night market was fun although I agree with other reviewers that not all the food offerings are Korean. I also found that a significant number employees of stores and restaurants in the Myeongdong neighborhood (and some other neighborhoods as well) can be quite rude to tourists, even when they’re trying to show respect by speaking Korean. Of course there are travelers who are self absorbed and unaware but not all tourists are like that.

For example, in one restaurant when someone in our group was trying to pay the bill the worker completely ignored him initially (there was barely anyone else dining at the time). When the worker finally acknowledged him he didn’t say a word - just handed him the bill with attitude. In another instance I bought skincare items at a popular skincare store and the self checkout machine told me to see an employee about a freebie I qualified for with my purchase. When I showed the receipt (which was in Korean), the woman crumpled it up, didn’t give it back to me and said I was done. I was exhausted and had no desire to try and talk to a manager because they obviously didn’t care about tourist’s experiences so I left. At a clothing store the cashiers were visibly irritated with customers who weren’t doing anything else but shopping. One young girl in the next line over had trouble communicating during her transaction. The cashier ringing her up rudely grabbed something out of the hands of another customer to show the girl to try and make her understand. (And then in my line a Korean customer yelled at a Filipina customer who didn’t understand the cashier.)

A friend of mine who happened to be visiting Seoul with her family at the same time sadly also experienced the same treatment at the various places they visited. (Even the employee at the visitors center of a popular temple acted like we were bothering him.) We both agreed that we had no desire to make a return visit.

How to buy skincare like a pro at Myeongdong Myeongdong Shopping Street is the Mecca of Korean skincare. However, just the mere intensity of it can be a bit overwhelming. The streets are really crowded and all the shops are trying to sell everything for your skin and body and as much as they can.

How can you make your visit to this street beneficial to yourself ?
- The options of brands and range of products is quite huge, so its best to understand before hand on what exactly are you looking for. A pre-reserach comes in hany. For example : I wanted to snail serum, retinol and lip tints
- The stores offer Tax free receipts to foreigners so dont forget to ask for one. They would need to scan your passport for the same
- Most of the stores are running 1+1 offer so you can find a good value. Alternatively you can buy 1 set for half the price. Also once you have finalised what you want to buy, make sure that you ask for free gift. They usually give you a product
- Dont get sucked into any product that would need you to use with a help of dermatologist, because its better to visit a dermatologist first rather than buying the product on your own
- Be specific about your skin type and be patient with the sales staff here them first and then decide what you want to buy, else they will just listen to you and tell you what you want to hear instead of sharing the real benefits of the product

What else can you do here?
- Try the street food, its delicious

First Visit as Solo Travel at Myeongdong Night Market The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the food. From sizzling skewers of meat to steaming bowls of noodles, there was no shortage of culinary delights. The market was a kaleidoscope of lights and colors, with stalls lined up in a neat rows, each offering something unique. It was a lively scene, yet there was a sense of community and camaraderie among locals and tourists.

Perfect for Souvenirs and Snacking We spent a lot of time in this area looking at souvenirs and snacking. There are quite a few inexpensive shops to get souvenirs at and we found a highlight in the area was the HBAF almonds which even have their own store in the area.

After 5 pm the street really comes alive when lots of food stalls move in to prepare all kinds of food. There was a good variety but some highlights were the coconut shrimp and the candied fruit. You could spend a couple of hours in this area and even more if you find a good restaurant or cafe. Closest metro is Myeondong.

The center of all the action is right here in Myeongdong! Myeongdong is located right across from the Lotteverse area right across the street. If you’re taking transit, particularly from uses, just got off at the Lotte stop, and Myeongdong will be right across the street. It will be easy to spot. If you’re coming from the underground, the entrance to Myeongdong is at exit 15 from the underground at the station “nearby”. Honestly, just take a bus, it’ll drop you off right there.

Meyongdong is a large shopping area, akin to some of the bigger shopping areas in other Asian countries. Very similar to Ximending in Taiwan, or Shinjuku in Japan. There’s an interesting mixture of both regular store brand store fronts, but as the day goes on (usually a bit after noon, perhaps closer to 1pm) all of the street stalls will start making their way out and crowding up the main road area of Myeongdong, mostly offering an abundance of street food options for those who want to walk and snack. I would say compared to Namdaemun, once the food stands come out, there’s way more variety and options to pick from street food wise than there.

There’s also an abundance of random streets and alleys you can walk into in the area, each one packed with their own unique places to choose from, though unique may be a stretch since some of the kinds of stores repeats. But again, some of these alleys are fun, and I would recommend deviating to see what’s there.

If you’re in Seoul, I would strongly recommend dropping by Myeongdong for just the experience alone.

Though busy, the crowds give it life, creating a bustling atmosphere that’s both exciting and unforgettable. Whether you’re here to shop, eat, or just soak in the vibrant surroundings, Myeongdong has something for everyone.

It is a high energy and busy complex of many criss crossing streets with very many stores both brand name and smaller local stores. You will find a plethora of cosmetic shops sometimes one after the other. You should be able to satisfy all your shopping needs and eating needs also as the area has hundreds of restaurants and coffee and tea shops. Yes, McDonald's and Starbucks are there. My beautiful Myeongdong ❤️ This is one of the must-see areas in Seoul Korea, I just loved it ! You find tones of souvenir, beauty, phones accessories, gadgets and cute items shops, food stores and Korean markets and of course street food everywhere you look from sweet treats to salty variety. We spent hours moving here and there trying out foods and ending the tour with a visit to one of the biggest Daiso stores (my favorite brand!)
If you are into skin care and beauty products Myeongdong is a heavenly destination. There is also an underground market below the shopping street you can get there from the main subway station. We traveled twice the 1st time was in october and the second in July.we spent 2 months total in South Korea and so I got plenty of time to discover most of it and experienced the Myeongdong phenomenon many time!

Myeongdong: A Skincare Shopper's Paradise (and a Window Shopper's Delight) Myeongdong: A Skincare Shopper's Paradise (and a Window Shopper's Delight)

Myeongdong, a bustling district in Seoul, South Korea, is renowned for its vibrant street life, diverse culinary scene, and, most notably, its extensive skincare and cosmetics offerings. While the district's reputation as a shopper's haven is well-deserved, the experience can vary greatly depending on one's budget and shopping preferences.

For those on a skincare shopping spree, Myeongdong is undoubtedly a paradise. Local and international brands are densely packed together, creating a shopper's mecca. Brands considered luxury items in the Philippines, such as Tony Moly and Etude House, are readily available and significantly more affordable than in the Philippines. The sheer density and variety of shops, reminiscent of a high-end version of Divisoria, is truly impressive. The opportunity to compare prices and products side-by-side is a major advantage for the discerning shopper.

However, the experience isn't solely defined by the price tags. The energy of Myeongdong is infectious. The streets teem with both Koreans and international tourists, creating a vibrant and exciting atmosphere. The opportunity to simply wander, soak in the sights and sounds, and engage in some window shopping is an experience in itself. Even without purchasing anything, the visual spectacle of the shops and the overall ambiance is captivating.

My personal experience was shaped by my own budget constraints. Converting currency and navigating international pricing is a deterrent for many, and I found myself primarily window shopping. While I appreciated the lower prices compared to my home country, the cost of even basic street food still felt relatively high. However, the significant savings on cosmetics, often ₱20-₱50 less per item, made the experience worthwhile even without making extensive purchases. The unique Starbucks locations added a pleasant touch to the overall experience, offering a welcome respite from the bustling streets.

In conclusion, Myeongdong offers a multifaceted experience. For those with the means, it's a shopper's dream, offering a vast selection of skincare and cosmetics at incredibly competitive prices. However, even for budget-conscious travelers like myself, the vibrant atmosphere, unique street food (despite the price), and the sheer spectacle of the shopping district make it a worthwhile destination. It's a place where the thrill of discovery and the allure of affordable luxury coexist, creating a memorable experience regardless of your spending habits.

Myeongdong Night Market is a must for dinner No trip to Seoul is complete without a visit to a night market and eating dinner from the street vendors - and this one in a great location. So many things to sample that I wish we had gone multiple nights. Bring cash! I recommend walking a few blocks and making an ad hoc plan otherwise you will run out of money and/or rom in your stomach.

(PS, not sure why this listing has a ticket price associated - you don't need a tour; just go and wander). Note that there is no official outdoor seating so be ready to stand or find an ad hoc place to perch, We did find some available stairs in front of a closed shop.

It closes later than most of the other shops too and the energy is palpable.

The Khao San Road of Seoul Why you would go here, I don't know?! Think McDonalds, HnM and adult stores like Bangla road or Khao San road in Thailand with a few cheap Korean face mask stores. Honestly, waste of time going here. Most touristy overrated recc. in Seoul. Don't bother.

The whole area is crowded and chaotic to me, people pushed you around and never apologized.

A Vibrant Mix of Tradition and Trend Myeongdong is the heart of Seoul’s energy. A blend of trendy shops, street food, and a unique cultural vibe, it’s the perfect place to experience the city’s pulse. The streets are lined with beauty stores and fashion boutiques, while the smell of tteokbokki and hotteok fills the air—making it a food lover’s paradise.

Though busy, the crowds give it life, creating a bustling atmosphere that’s both exciting and unforgettable. Whether you’re here to shop, eat, or just soak in the vibrant surroundings, Myeongdong has something for everyone.

Most of the food and snack sold are hardly Korean We last visited this place 5 years ago and it is still bustling with people in December 2023. It is noticeable that the prices charged by the street vendors are higher than other areas, and most of the food and snack sold are hardly Korean. Anyway, we had a blast trying pork and beef skewers, steamed egg buns, 10-won cheese pancakes, fried chicken, and kimchi and pork dumplings. We also visited various clothing and sports shops including SPAO, 8 seconds, Nike Myeongdong, FIFA, etc.
