A Haven market for authentic, home cooked local food, tasty snacks & side dishes...... Have been to countless markets in different cities in Korea but this one stands out differently. Main concentration here is food . Rows & rows of cooked food stalls selling delicious no frills homecook food, complimented by many others selling tasty looking snacks. Of course one still find the usual offerings found in other markets. Place is always very crowded with tourists. If you love to bring back delicious & authentic Korean side dishes, there are 2 big & long established shops ( next to each other) selling identical stuff - large varieties ( see photos). We have tried both over previous visits, both are good. They will vacuum packed your purchases for you to take back safely. Packed all into your luggage except Kimchi ( must be handcarried ). Caution: Some customs may ban bringing kimchi in though . We had ours confiscated last time. A must go market in Seoul

Korean street food classics The Kwangjang (sometimes spelled Gwangjang) market is a real foodie heaven. Many resources on the internet say it closes at 6PM and this may be true for many of the shops, however the food scene seems to be going strong at least until 10:00 PM. Here you will find many street food classics such as mung bean pancakes, Korean blood sausage, dumplings, steak tartare, fresh octopus and many others. All menus are in English, I don’t see why you would book a tour to come here to eat - read up on the Korean street food dishes and venture out on your own - I met several nice Koreans as I was hoping from stall to stall who was very friendly and wanted to share their food culture and their Soju with a total stranger. Geonbae!

Worth the visit(but be prepared for the push and shove)!! Lots of stalls selling common street food. Extremely crowded and be prepared for lots of shoving and pushing. Found a stall selling fish shape pancake or waffles. The couple manning the stall were very organised and thoughtful. Their pancakes had only three types of fillings - red bean, custard or pizza. Tried all three and would personally recommend the custard filling. They were very generous with the filings.

Great Place to Eat and Hang Out Definitely a must visit for tourists in Seoul and the combination with cheap and delicious food is hard to beat. Loved the Hotteok (near the twisted donut place) with honey and cheese. Tried a mung bean pancake. And had a great dinner at one of the places for about 25,000 won for 2 people, including soju. Really nice to see prices and names of dishes before you sit down, and the food is served right in front of you. Later in the evening on weekdays it's not as crowded and definitely a nice place to meet up with friends and talk the night away over food and drinks.

A great way to experience Korean culture We visited by subway station Jongno 5-ga.It is 50 metres from the station. There are lots of food stalls selling multiple local dishes. We chose a family run fish restaurant that was popular with local people. We had kimchi chilli and cabbage starters and spicy pollock roe stew which blew our heads off much to the amusement of the Koreans. We communicated in sign language.Luckily they sold cold beers.A great experience.

Authentic local food experience This traditional market is the best way to know more about the local food culture. The aroma of the korean delicacies surrounds the area where most of the food vendors were concentrated and you will be spoilt for choice at the market. We feel like a local when we sit in front of the stall to try the famous mungbean pancake which is freshly made on the spot and it taste not too bad. There are also shops that sells korean snack and souvenirs that are cheaper than the ones sold at myeongdong shopping street.

A must for travelers who want a fun Korean experience A favorite place of ours. We go often and try new places to eat each time. You can find everything from A-Z here. Busy, crowed place. Just sit on an open chair and feast. Great prices. Once COVID a goes away things will get back to normal hopefully.

Market for foodies I went to this famous market for food. I saw stalls selling snacks and meal, but decided to go to the small restaurant instead as I do not speak Korean at all. The restaurant has the proper menu with pics that is helpful enough. The food was good enough.
As for shops, there are varieties of items from fresh ingredients to textile. There are some shops selling souvenirs, too. I think tourists come here more for the food.

A taste of Real Korea We watched Netflix show about street food of Seoul and it was a must do and see for us when we visited Seoul last week. We managed to find the stall from the show which makes the famous mung bean pancakes 🥞. The market was so big and it felt like it wasn’t ending. You can find anything there: food, clothes, fabric, sea food it’s definitely a must visit in Seoul as you will experience a real Korean culture.

Tourist trap Gwanjang market was a traditional bustling market in the centre of Seoul however it has now turned into a tourist trap. Most of the stores are repeats of each other and the prices are more expensive compared to other markets. We tried tteobokki and bindaetok there and was not impressed. Do not recommend and would not revisit.

An interesting experience Unfortunately on the second day of the lunar year, apart from the street food stalls and restaurants, only like 5 fruit stores and stores selling souvenirs and other things were open. We managed to get some probably overpriced kitchenware.

Amongst the four streets in the market, three were on food. The vibrant food stalls were interesting to visit. And yes, the benches were “hot”. The ladies and men serving were nice and there was menu in English, Chinese and Japanese. We also saw Chinese translators seemingly from the Tourist Associations standing by.

Should visit

Bustling market, nothing special The market was busy and bustling with local vendors. Some.clothing on the outskirts amd mostly food in the centre. We had some dumplings pink ones and birmal yellow ones. Both were disappointing as they were tofu/vegetarian. Flavor ok if u like veggie ok, just not the meat i was expecting.
Overall the vendors/ prices/ food quality was pretty ordinary. We left after a couple hrs tovfind more interesting areas of Seoul.

Though Kwangjang Market had various item, but there was famous for Korean street food, Korean-style raw beef, mung-bean pancake, gimbap, and so on. If want to eat Korean street food, there was very good market to enjoy it. The inside road was small and many people was crowded. The price was nor expensive for trying food. Nothing different from other markets This place was nothing special from other markets around South Korea.

Still worth a visit, just to take in the atmosphere. Most of the food is typical street food, recommend finding a place that has a lot of people. This usually indicates it’s a pretty good place.

There are a few Netflix famous spots, but don’t let that be your deciding factor.

Lots of “street food” options Was initially a bit confused and intimidated by the setup but eventually found it be a very way to discover new food. Not sure who is buying the clothes on sale but the food stalls definitely attract lots of customers. Just need the guts to sit down at one of the places and give the offerings a try. Seems to be segmented a bit by seafood, noodles, etc. Ended up having delicious food for very little money. Food stalls were closing up fast at 3PM when we were there so get there early enough to have options.

A Must-Visit for Food Lovers – Netflix Was Right! We visited Gwangjang Market after seeing it featured on Netflix and hearing endless praise—and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The food quality was outstanding. We tried the cold buckwheat noodles, which were refreshing and full of flavour, and the famous fried donuts that might just be the best we’ve ever had—so soft, fresh, and delicious. We also grabbed a latte from Ilho Coffee, and honestly, it was the best I’ve ever had (and that’s saying something, having tried coffee across Italy!). An unmissable stop for food lovers in Seoul.

Night tour One of our stops on the night tour was the Gwangjang Market where some of my family members were brave enough to try eating live octopus. I was not even brave enough to sit at the same table with them. I did try their famous pancakes from one of their vegetarian stalls and was mildly impressed. The best find for me in this market was their donuts. The line was long but moved fast. They could not make them fast enough. My family went back for seconds. If you are ever in this market go for the freshly made donuts (its soaped long instead of round), the taste is worth every calorie. You can watch it being made as well. Priced moderately.

Good for one visit only? My family sat at a stall that was empty at the time (but as we finished our lunch all the empty chairs were almost full). Tried the great spicy tteokbokki and shared some mandu (dumplings), gimbap, fish cakes and bibimbap. Perhaps not the best food I ate during my stay, but very decent.

The issue I saw was that most food vendors seemed to serve the same dishes and although I can’t compare their cooking styles, this fact would make me think twice to return. When we went to see the Myeongdong Nanta show all the street vendors were offering their innovative cuisine in the streets (including lobster with cheese) and all the stalls offered something different. I wish this market offered that (or at least some type of) dish variety.

An average market As food markets or night markets go, this one is no more than average. It is part of a larger produce, fish, chicken and meat (and some clothing) market.

Its obvious advantage is that it is covered and so a reasonable destination even in inclement weather. It also has two clear disadvantages: 1- the variety of food served is very limited. You have stall after stall serving the exact same thing. 2- the aisles are narrow. We were there late afternoon on a weekday, and there were spots where passage was difficult. I wonder whether passage becomes more difficult in the evening or on weekends.

Authentic markets that have been commercialized for tourists Inside the market, there are various types of food to try. The green bean pancakes are delicious, and the cold noodles and sticky rice sausages are also worth a try. Additionally, there are raw beef and raw octopus available. Some parts of the market also sell fresh fruits and vegetables, groceries, and quilts. Although it has been commercialized for tourists, you can still come and experience it.

The gourmet traveler must visited there.

A must go market in Seoul

many different items for sale They sell lots of different things here. Cloth, rice, snacks, meals, street food, souvenirs, etc. Even on weekdays it is full of people, especially the food area. It's not where you can buy the cheapest souvenir, but it was nice trying out the different foods.

Lots of variety at this market. Be prepared for the crowd. Lots of food options not just to dine in but also to buy back souvenirs. If buying banchan they will vacum pack them for you. Prices are Similar most stalls. No hard selling. When eating there do take note they will require each person to order a dish at least. Food comes quick and you just pass them your dishes when done.

Good traditional food This market isn’t as busy as Namdaemun market but is fully enclosed. The stalls are pretty repetitive but variety of food is still good nonetheless.

Busy market with lots of things to sell! From Dongdaemun subway station, it was approx.15-min walk to market. We went on Jan.1, and the market was busy, packed with people. There were some stalls closed, but many were still open. Market has lots of food options, and things to buy, so you can spend hours there!

Just sit on an open chair and feast. Great prices. Once COVID a goes away things will get back to normal hopefully.

Cheaper food than other but not cheapest Not going to same the same as other reviewers but!!!
When you seat and eat they expect you to order per person. Can’t really share and order small amount.
For example this is for the sit in small table
We are 3 in the group we wanted to just sample the food so we can try other food.
Give you 3 order gimbap rice roll 3$ per order
3 fish cake 3$ each other
2 dumpling 5$ each order
But other she allowed 1 order like chicken feet

Might be Seoul's Greatest Gem A true treasure in Seoul. I miss this place more than anything. The people, be it vendors or those who sit next to you, are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The food is incredible no matter where you go, pick what you like, but also take the advice of the friendly vendors beckoning you to their booths. Love this place dearly and you will too.

Geonbae!

Fantastic market in Seoul Traditional market with delicious Korean food.
We regretted not going there on our first few days of our trip so that we can visit the market again.

Go with an empty stomach as there's quite a lot of food there to try even though there are similar food sold by different vendors.

Eaten some Netflix featured food & they were delicious. Do go earlier to avoid the crowd. We reached there around 930am.
